ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS. It is for individuals who need to have U.S tax payer identification number but do not have or are not eligible to obtain a SSN (Social Security Number).
I stay at Louisville , KY with my husband. He has a SSN and I don't as I'm on H4. Below is the process we followed to obtain ITIN with in-person verification where your passport will be returned to you immediately.
Documents required:
A) Dependent's original passport
B) Copy of Federal returns filing
C) W-7 form
D) Print out of the first and last page of dependent's passport, Visa page.
The nearest office from Louisville that does in-person verification is in Indianapolis. It opens at 8:30 am. Try and make it as early as possible. We were there at 8:30 sharp yet there were 15 people ahead in the line. They will give you a token number. Once they call out, submit all documents and your part is done. Now the officer there will take over from there. The entire procedure takes about 15-20 minutes ( excluding waiting time). I got my passport immediately after verification. She informed that I will get my ITIN in 10 weeks and the refund 2 weeks thereafter. All dependents must be present during the verification process.
We filed our federal returns on turbotax. When an error occurs asking for SSN for dependent, go ahead and print without it.
